Morning Book Readings

The morning book readings can be heard on weekdays at 9:30 am with that day's episode repeated at 9:15 pm. The week's readings are repeated from 12:00 midday to 2:30 pm on Saturday. The current and future morning book readings are as follows:

Wyrd Sisters - by Terry Pratchett.

Reader: Sue Farrelly.

This book reading will commence on Thursday 4th February 2010.

A humorous fantasy, the 6th novel in the Disc World Series.

The three witches of Lancre are reluctantly drawn into the affairs of the Royal House, when King Verence is assassinated by Duke Felmet, urged on by his ruthless wife.

The rightful heir, a baby boy, is taken from the palace and handed to the witches who place him out of harm's way with a travelling group of actors.

When Felmet starts to harrass the Wyrd Sisters, they decide that it is time they put the Kingdom to rights. The outcome is rather unexpected but it seems to work.

Marlee and Me - by John Grogan.

This book reading will commence on Monday 15th March 2010.

A young couple, John and Jenny, living in Palm Beach, Florida and working as journalists on local newspapers, have fond memories of their childhood pet dogs.

John's Sean and Jenny's pet setter were perfect dogs, quiet, obedient and well-behaved.

So when the couple purchased a cute golden Labrador puppy their expectations are high. But raising Marlee does not turn out as planned.

The Secret River - by Kate Grenville.

This book reading will commence on Thursday 21st January 2010.

In 1806 William Thornhill, a young man from the London slums, arrives in the colony of New South Wales aboard the convict ship. the Alexander. He has been sentenced to transportation for life for the crime of theft. His wife, Sal, chooses to accompany him as a free woman along with their two young children.

Will is assigned to Sal as a convict servant, and after eight years in the harsh surroundings of the settlement, he sails up the Hawkesbury River, a free man with a land grant of 100 acres.

I this isolated spot, near aborigines living in their traditional way, Will struggles to make a life for his family.

This novel was the winner of two Australian literary awards and was short-listed for the 2008 Man Booker prize.

Girl with a Pearl - by Tracey Chevalier.

This book reading will commence on Monday 8th March 2010.

The story is set in 17th Century Holland and is the richly imagined story of Grete, a poor girl who worked as a maid in the household of the painter Vermeer and who was the inspiration for his most famous painting.


Children's Book Reading

The Children's Book Reading can be heard on Fridays at 4:00pm and is repeated at 7:00am on Sunday morning.

The Cruise of the Condor - by W E Johns.

Reader: Gerald Lynch.

This book reading will commence on Friday 8th January 2010.

This, the second book in the Biggles series, was first published in 1933.

A visit to Biggles' uncle, Dickpa, lands Biggles, Algy and mechanic Smyth in a dangerous adventure looking for an ancient inca treasure hoard.

Biggles visits his elderly uncle Dickpa, only to find his English house under armed siege by a gang allied to Silas Blattner who are determined that Dickpa will give them the location of Incan treasure in Ecuador. Escaping from the house, Biggles returns in an aircraft to rescue his friends and they organise an expedition to South America to recover the treasure. Once in Brazil they use a flying boat, which they name Condor, to fly over the rainforest and to land on the rivers as they make their way to the location of the treasure. Followed by a larger flying boat carrying Blattner's men, our heroes locate the treasure cave only to find it empty before eventually stumbling across a lost city filled with treasue and the bodies of its long dead inhabitants. Returning to the Condor, a volcanic explosion preventing them taking all but a little treasure, they take off only to be confronted by Blattner's plane which attempts to shoot them down.
